Exploring the Universe:
What you can learn today from light emitted millions to billions of years ago

Abstract:
Using observations taken from Earth, how can cosmologists determine the structure and evolution of the whole Universe? Tiny fluctuations in a nearly-uniform glow of microwave-frequency light across the entire sky; hundreds of distant exploding stars; the way that over 900,000 galaxies are distributed in space and grouped into clusters; these (and other) observations help us address questions about the composition and history of the universe, and test assumptions underlying our understanding. How is the expansion of the universe speeding up, and will it likely continue to do so? Does the law of gravity still hold across these huge cosmological scales?
